'Woodstock Choir, art gallery celebrate Mohawk poet'
THE SONG MY PADDLE SINGS is a recording project instigated by the Woodstock Fanshawe Singers to help mark the 100th anniversary of the death of Six Nations Canadian poet and performer, E. Pauline Johnson.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
This collaborative project will feature a diverse group of Ontario Youth and Adult choirs in a compilation CD, all singing the poetry of E. Pauline Johnson. The musical settings by Canadian composers Jeff Smallman, Matthew Emery, Rory Magill and Ruth Watson Henderson, offer singers and audience alike a chance to rekindle interest in the life and work of this important Canadian poet and performer. Central to the recording are the settings of Johnson’s most popular poem, The Song My Paddle Sings. Composers Rory Magill and Matthew Emery were commissioned to set this poem to music in their unique voice. These settings sit in contrast to the existing setting by acclaimed Canadian composer, Ruth Watson Henderson. Contributing artists will include: WFS, Cantiamo Girls Choir of Ottawa, Six Vocal Ensemble, Les Choristes Women’s Choir, Western University.
Special celebrations and exhibits will take place simultaneously with the Chiefswood Museum, Brantford, the birth place of E. Pauline Johnson. Artistic partners include the Woodstock Fanshawe Singers, Cantiamo Girls Choir, Six Vocal Ensemble, Les Choristes and the Elmer Eisler Singers.
The experience of singing the poetry of E. Pauline Johnson will renew interest in her life and body of work for all of the singers involved as well as those who hear the recording!
